Storying Sheffield

Stories of empowerment, stories of dis-empowerment

This Storying project is part of a large research initiative entitled “Empowering whom? The Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the problem of empowerment” led by Dr Lucy Series. Lucy’s research is critically exploring how ‘empowering’ The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) has been in its implementation in real world situations.

The MCA provides a legal framework for making ‘best interests’ decisions on behalf of adults who lack ‘mental capacity’ because of mental disabilities like dementia or learning disabilities.

Brendan Stone and Chrissy Bonham are leading a series of narrative workshops with a range of stakeholders to uncover the realities and pressures which frame decision making and ‘choice’. Films are being made about these workshops by Change.
