Storying Sheffield

Women of Steel

‘Women of Steel’ is a project run by Sheffield City Council and the Off the Shelf festival of reading and writing which commemorates the efforts of Sheffield women in the steel industry during WWII.

In December 2010 and January 2011 students from Storying Sheffield met with some of the women of steel, and from those meetings produced a moving and creative film which reflects on their meetings and the women’s lives.

The film was premiered at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield in February 2011, and the showing was followed by a question and answer session with the women of steel and the students.  The event was amazingly popular, and an unplanned second screening was put on to accommodate the many people who were unable to get in because the room was full.

The film was shown again at Sheffield Town Hall for International Women’s Day on 7th March 2011.  The event was jointly organised by Sheffield City Council and the University of Sheffield.

The Women of Steel film has also been used as an educational resource in schools and in Age UK training seminars for social work students.
