Women of Steel: The film
'Women of Steel' is a project run by Sheffield City Council and the Off the Shelf festival of reading and writing which commemorates the efforts of Sheffield women in the steel industry during WWII. In December 2010 and January 2011 students from Storying Sheffield met with some of the women of steel, and from those meetings produced a moving and creative film which reflects on their meetings and the women's lives. The film was premiered at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield in February 2011, and the showing was followed by a question and answer session with the women of steel and the students. The event was amazingly popular, and an unplanned second screening was put on to accommodate the many people who were unable to get in because the room was full. The film is being shown again at Sheffield Town Hall for International Women's Day on 7th March 2011, and the women of steel will again be talking about their lives. The event is jointly organised by Sheffield City Council and the University of Sheffield. Tickets can be booked by emailing governance&involvement@sheffield.gov.uk. We hope there will be further screenings of the film in the near future. Join the Storying Sheffield mailing list for news, and check the news page of this site. |
